Family-to-Family
The Family-to-Family Education Program is a free 12-week course for family and friends of individuals with serious mental illness taught by local NAMI members who have received special training. Sessions are 3 hours in length and meet once a week for twelve weeks. This class offers information about illnesses of the brain and their treatment such as:
- Current information about schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder and co-occurring brain disorders and addictive disorders
- Up-to-date information about medications, side effects and strategies for medication adherence
- Current research related to the biology of brain disorders and the evidence-based, most effective treatments to promote recovery
Learn coping skills:
- Gain empathy by understanding the subjective, lived experience of a person with mental illness
- Learn problem solving, listening and communication techniques
- Acquire strategies for handling crises and relapse
- Focus on caring for the caregiver: coping with worry, stress and emotional overload
Learn the power of Advocacy:
- Locate appropriate supports and services within Polk County and nearby areas
- Gain knowledge about local advocacy initiatives designed to improve and expand services for your loved one
Who Should Attend?
- Anyone who is the friend or family member of someone with a serious mental illness
- Anyone who cares for someone with a mental illness or anyone who works with the public such as social workers, nurses, teachers, clergy or law enforcement officers.
